Samsung Galaxy Nexus India Launch this Month-End, will Cost a Bomb [Exclusive]

Google’s flagship Android smartphone – the Galaxy Nexus from Samsung will be launching in India by the end of November, credible sources told Technically Personal. While the news of the first ever smartphone with the latest Android 4.0 Ice-cream sandwich coming to India is a great news, the expected price at which it will be launched is a bummer. According to these sources, Galaxy Nexus (16GB) will be priced at around Rs. 38,000!

Google has already started promoting the Galaxy Nexus by setting up a dedicated registration page for India and 17 other countries like Australia, Brazil, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Portugal, US, UK, Taiwan, Thailand & Netherlands.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus features a huge 4.65″ Super AMOLED HD screen with a whopping 1280×720 pixel resolution, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM and 5MP rear camera. It also comes with NFC, HSPA+ 21Mbps and 1,750 mAh battery.

Traditionally, Google has not promoted their flagship Nexus devices in India. The original Nexus One didn’t even make it here. And its successor, Nexus S had a delayed launch and ended up drastically dropping its price and eventually went out of market. So this news of Google (and Samsung) taking India seriously for their Galaxy Nexus launch is a welcome change.

Though we always knew that Galaxy Nexus won’t come cheap, the sourced price of INR 38k should come as a shocker for many. Samsung Galaxy S2 was priced around 32k when it was launched in India and today Samsung launched that mammoth Galaxy Note at INR 34.5k. But tech pundits will argue that the price shouldn’t surprise anyone as this will be a global launch and the Indian prices are on-par with what we have seen in Europe. Amazon UK has listed Samsung Galaxy Nexus at £549.99 (approx INR 43,000) with Nov 17th as the release date. Going by these facts, we tend to believe even more about what our Indian sources have told us.

Note: If you remember, we were one of the first ones to provide details about Galaxy Nexus and there, we had talked about a possible surprise announcement, which our source indicated as a Nexus Tab. Well, the same source still believes that Google and Samsung held back that announcement for some mysterious reasons and we might indeed expect an announcement soon. We expect something like a padfone where the Galaxy Nexus slides into. But then, we are taking this just on its face value and classifying it as a rumor for now.

Android 3.0 Honeycomb features overview

Android Honeycomb is the name for Android version3.0 which is a tablet operating system, designed on an open source platform. The system was developed on a modified version of the Linux kernel. In 2005, Google purchased Android and now it is an important aspect of Google Inc.’s operating systems.

The first operating system was known as 2.0 and 2.1 or Éclair. Following Android Éclair was Android 2.2, also known as Froyo. Following Froyo was Android 2.3 also known as Android GingerBread and now, the Tablet version of Android OS is Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Google is planning a future release of another Android operating system, expected to be released somewhere in the middle of 2011. That operating system will be known as Ice Cream Sandwich.

Android Honeycomb brings a number of new features to Android including a holographic user interface design. Because Android Honeycomb is an operating system it is used in a number of different products such as tablets, netbooks and cell phones. You’ll also find Android Honeycomb in different products ranging from HTC, Dell and Samsung’s Nexus. If Apple users want to use Android Honeycomb they can use an exploit that will let them access Android.

You’ll find that there is a big difference between Android Honeycomb and previous versions as the previous versions weren’t suitable for use with tablet pcs, thus the need to tweak and build upon the Android platform. Android Honeycomb brought a highly detailed and interactive user interface display to large screens. The user interface consists of multi panels, grids with widgets and icons, and is extremely interactive.

The new upgrade makes it easy for tablet users to find their icons and control their applications with a light touch. There are five customizable home screens to ensure that users can have the application they want, when then need it. In fact, you’ll find that Android Honeycomb was specifically designed and tailored for large screens. Users find that Android Honeycomb brings a wide array of visual enhancements such as 3D capabilities and is easy for users to customize as well as navigate.

A feature in the Android Honeycomb that many users find helpful is the system bar that remains in place continuously. The system bar is located at the bottom of the screen but users can dim it using a feature called “lights out mode.” Putting the system bar in lights out mode is effective for those who are watching movies or videos and would rather not see the system bar.

Android Honeycomb has been designed for users who need to multitask and you’ll find that bringing up different applications is easy and simple. The interface has been designed to make switching from one application to another trouble free and simple. 3 Apps Expected on New 4G Networks

At the International CES in Las Vegas a couple of carriers announced the launch of their 4G networks that users will be gliding onto this year. With the rollout of the faster, next-generation wireless networks users will be experiencing faster and steadier connections than those of the current 3G networks. It is expected that these networks will produce throughput that is ten times faster than that of the 3G networks.

Although the new-generation networks are only expected to cover the majority of the United States by the end of 2012, a large number of users will now begin experiencing the effects of the 4G network which will ensure no more waiting times for web pages to open on computers or smartphones or play high quality videos smoothly.

Network carriers will now also want to get as many users as possible on their new networks and will surely try to attract new clients with unbelievable applications that will fully utilize the speeds of their 4G networks. Well, a number of carriers have already started demonstrating new apps for use on the new networks.

Although these apps are nothing new, they are normal apps that we would use in all households on a daily basis. The apps focus on three categories in particular: HD Video Streaming, Videoconferencing and Online Gaming.

High Definition Video Streaming

Although watching a video on a smartphone with a 3G service is fast, this experience may also be coupled with pixilation, strange movements and sometimes screen freezes. Users may also notice that many videos do not display real high-definition quality on the device. The main reason for this is the fact that 3G services cannot establish a large enough pipe to the end device to deliver a high number of video data packets fast enough. Another problem is the high latency time, which could be around 150 milliseconds.

With the new 4G networks latency times will be much less. It is expected to be as little as 40 milliseconds. This near-instantaneous send and receive between connection and the end device, combined with much higher raw data speeds, could create video images that looks close to real high definition on the smartphone.

Videoconferencing

At the CES we found that the majority of all new smartphones announced, which have been developed specifically for the 4G networks, are equipped with front-facing cameras for videoconferencing purposes. Many of these devices have even moved from 1-megapixel to 2-megapixel cameras.

Videoconferencing is quite different from high definition streaming. Just like HD streaming, videoconferencing requires a certain amount of download speed, which is estimated at around 1MB per second. This will enable the receiver to view real-time movements on the other side of the device. The real problem, however, is upload speed.

Videoconferencing also requires low latency. This service often involve very little time between one person talking and another responding. When latency occurs, users are often talking over each other.

Servers today are configured to provide more download speed than upload speed, which often lead to bottlenecking in substandard videoconferencing sessions. Current 3G networks with its high latency rates often cause problematic videoconferencing.

4G networks are expected to reduce latency by about two-thirds. Although videoconferencing may still not be perfect, it will be much more effective than with today’s technology.

Mobile Gaming

The launch of the 4G networks have created a new possibility for gamers – to play high definition games with friends and family over mobile devices. This technology will likely see the first generation of real-time mobile games that operate on cellular networks.

The fact that 4G networks can deliver more data packets, upstream and downstream, at a more predictable rate and less latency, a new class of games will likely be born in the near future. These networks will be able to accommodate synchronous gaming, where players make quick moves in reaction to the moves of other players.

iPhone 5 to Feature a Curved Glass Screen?

According to recent information revealed by DigiTimes, it would appear that Apple may have acquired between 200 and 300 glass-cutting machines, specifically for slicing up curved glass display covers for the iPhone 5.

The rumors still remain unconfirmed as Apple approached the alleged September release date of the new generation iPhone handsets.

According to the rumors, the move has been in an effort to accelerate production, as glass makers were reluctant to buy these machines themselves due to high costs. This may even be yet another indication that Apple may plan an earlier release of the device.

Many people have stated that curved glass is not a good idea for smartphones at this time, and examples of why this should not be used can be seen in Dell’s Venue and HTC’s Sensation.

Well, we should not forget that Apple has been a player in the curved-glass field for some time, making use of their own custom solutions. The company made use of this technology in their iPod Nano screens for some time, which gives them quite some ideas of how the glass can be fitted onto the next generation smartphones.
